getting help helping your loved ones

When you have an elderly or special needs person living in your home, your days can seem to go on forever. Even though the days feel long, you feel that there simply aren't enough hours in the day to take care of everything you need to in a 24 hour period and have time left to take care of yourself. It is easy to run yourself ragged when you have someone depending on you. One thing I found to be my saving grace is the home care service that I hired to help me with my husband. Find out what a home care service can do to help you through these difficult days here on my blog.

Ways To Keep Your Senior Parent Safe At Home

Do you often worry about the safety of your senior parent who lives all alone? If so, there are some steps you can take that may help your parent stay safer and you feel better about them living alone. Here are some of the options you may want to consider that could help your senior parent stay safer.

Install higher toilets

One good task to complete in your parent's home involves replacing the toilet they use with one that is higher. A higher toilet is not only easier to sit down on but is also easier to get up from, and your parent will have fewer challenges if you do this.

Place bars in areas where needed

Secondly, you could place bars on the walls in the areas where these are needed. Next to the toilet is always a good option for a bar, as this offers a way for your parent to pull themselves up from the toilet. Next to the shower is also a good idea, and you might even want one next to the couch or bed.

Lower the hot water heater setting

You might also want to consider lowering the heat setting on the hot water heater in the house. If the hot water heater is set too hot, your parent could inadvertently burn themselves. If you set it low enough to where it is hot enough but not too hot, your parent would not have this risk.

Make more room in the house

It may also be a good idea to go through your parent's house and make more room in it. The purpose of this is to ensure that your parent can easily get from one room of the house to another without the risk of tripping over something. You may need to rearrange the furniture in the house, and you might even need to declutter the home to make sure it is safe for your parent to live in.

Hire a company to provide services

Finally, you should consider hiring a senior home care company to assist your parent if you are worried about his or her safety. These companies send workers in as often as you request and the workers help with a variety of different tasks. Having someone stopping in to check on your parent every couple of days is also a great step to take for your parent's safety and wellbeing. If you are ready to begin taking steps for your parent's safety, you can begin the process by contacting a company that offers in-home care services.
